Things to consider when buying a new bed

There are few things we use as much as a bed. But it can be tricky to choose the right one when it's time to buy. If you try a bed in a store, there are other customers around you, and the light and sound don't reflect your sleeping environment. You are also fully dressed and have active muscles, all things you don't have when you sleep at home. In addition, it is suggested that you try the bed in back and side positions so that the salesperson can get an idea of the support for your lower back and shoulders, even though you may not sleep still on your back or side all night.

Above all, you are awake, which can make it difficult to feel if your body works with the bed you are trying out. Because you can never tell if a bed is right for you after only a short time. It can take up to 5-6 weeks for your body to adjust to the new bed - and only then will you know.

Therefore, at Strömsholms sängar we have a guarantee that helps you if you are not satisfied. For the Premium and Royal segments, you have the opportunity to change the degree of firmness after 6 weeks. The right to exchange is valid for 8 weeks from the time you receive your bed, all so that you can sleep really well.

Which firmness should you choose?

Trying to figure out which firmness is best for you is not the easiest thing to do. For example, did you know that the firmness of a bed is not in the mattress, but in the spring system? A really good bed is one you sleep in, not on top of, with as little strain on your body as possible. It should also provide plenty of oxygen through good ventilation and stable comfort for many years to come.

All bed models are built based on what the characteristics of the model should be, which is done in the medium version. If you weigh up to 85 kg and are of normal height, you will fit in a medium. The same is true if you are taller and weigh more. If you have a higher weight or are shorter, you should opt for a firm bed. We build beds that give your body fantastic pressure relief and support when you sleep, regardless of your sleeping position.

What about the mattress pad? Normally, it doesn't provide any extra support, but only a final touch to your body. The bed provides the actual support and pressure relief.

What is a frame bed?

A traditional single bed also known as a spring mattress. The reason it is called a frame bed is because it is built with its wooden frame and springs in one piece. The only additional part is the mattress.

Frame beds are built with different types of springs, but also with different layers of springs. If you place two frame beds next to each other, you get a double bed with a choice of medium or firm design.

What is a continental bed?

A higher bed with at least 2 mattress layers in addition to the bed mattress. The name itself originates from the continent, where beds are built with a base and a duvet without a mattress. This means that there are 2 layers of spring mattresses on top of each other, something we have also adopted here in the Nordic countries but in a slightly different way.

The advantage of a continental bed is that you get a full sleeping surface, where no joints are experienced in a double bed with two lower parts on top of a full cushion/intermediate mattress. Here you can choose between medium or firm design for each sleeping side.

What is a motor bed?

Originally, motorized or adjustable beds were mostly used in healthcare and elderly care, but in recent years have been developed for home use. Today, motorized beds are available with anything from 2 to 6-7 motors, sometimes more. However, the most common are 2 motors, one for the head end and one for the foot end.

If you like to lie in bed and read or watch TV, an adjustable bed is handy for you. By folding up the head end slightly, this bed can also prevent snoring. It can also provide great relief for those with back problems, as you can adjust the lying position just the way you want it.

Firmness is largely determined by the spring system in the bed. A continental bed usually has at least two spring systems, one on the lower wooden frame and one in the upper part of the cushion/intermediate mattress. The upper part adjusts the firmness of the bed, i.e. medium or firm feeling.

A frame and adjustable bed also has at least two spring systems, a lower system in the wooden frame and another one built directly on top of the lower one. Again, the upper layer of springs adjusts the firmness of the bed. However, it is not only the springs that give the bed its characteristics. The construction of the wooden frame, the tension of the fabric, corner and edge reinforcements and natural latex or comfort foam also play a role.

It is usually said that the firmness a customer chooses is determined by their weight. If you weigh less than about 85 kg, your bed should have a medium firmness. If you weigh more than 85 kg, you should choose a firm bed if you are of normal height. The shape of your body is also important. A short and stocky person who weighs as much as someone tall and thin should still choose a different degree of firmness in their bed. Also think about how you sleep in your bed. If you sleep on your stomach, you should choose a firmer bed to avoid pain in your back and neck. If you sleep on your back, in some cases you may need a slightly softer bed to allow your butt and shoulders to sink in. However, it is not so common to keep the same sleeping position throughout the night. Men, who have more muscle mass than women, can often get warmer in their sleep and change sleeping positions more frequently. A firm bed provides better conditions for most sleeping positions than a soft bed, something to consider when making your purchase. Our continental beds come in several different firmnesses. Almost means that the whole bed has the same firmness, medium means that the whole bed has the same firmness, whereas solid/medium means that one side is almost and the other side is medium. Solid/medium is for two people who want a bed with two different firmnesses to sleep in. Different firmnesses in the middle mattress of a continental bed are not visible at all, as it is the springs in the mattress itself that have varying firmness. On the outside, the bed looks neat and uniform. This also applies to our frame and motorized beds, which are also available in different degrees of firmness. Remember, a firm bed may feel cuddly and soft because the mattress is, but it's actually the firmness of the bed that supports you and your body! See below how firmness sits in the beds: firmness
Good sleep is the most important factor for the body's recovery and repair. Sleep is an active state that provides us with much-needed and vital recharge and energy. We need between six and nine hours of sleep per day, depending on how effective it is. We actually sleep for a third of our lives, which means that a person who lives for 80 years spends about 25.5 of those years sleeping. Listing the number of hours we sleep gives a clear picture of how much time we spend sleeping:
  • 7.5 hours/day
  • 229 hours/month
  • 1.3 weeks/month
  • 15.6 weeks/year

Why do we need to sleep?

Sleep is incredibly important for our well-being. When we sleep, our breathing becomes calmer, our heart rate decreases, our body temperature drops and the activity of the immune system increases. The electrical activity of the brain changes, which processes and sorts the information received during the day. During deep sleep, the muscles also relax as the body recovers and rebuilds. The brain works more slowly and the production of stress hormones is reduced. The need for sleep varies from person to person and it is the quality of sleep that is important. This means not being disturbed during sleep, not waking up too often and getting enough deep sleep. Deep sleep in the first hours of the night is the most important part of your sleep for your body to recover.

Sleep well

Don't go to bed without being sleepy. Make sure to unwind for an hour or so before going to bed. It is important to be relaxed and calm, so try to deal with stress and problems before bedtime. Avoid caffeinated drinks, use a good bed and have regular bedtimes. Avoid long naps during the day, exercise regularly and also make sure you get plenty of light during the day, especially in the morning. We sleep best when:
  • The temperature is 16-18 degrees
  • The air is clean and fresh
  • It is as dark as possible
  • The humidity level is 45-55%.
When you choose a bed from Strömsholm, you minimize the risk of disturbances during the night. You sleep quietly and comfortably in a bed that molds to your body, so you don't have to struggle to find a new, comfortable sleeping position.

Don't forget to take care of your bed! You are actually in it for 6-8 hours a night. We strongly recommend vacuuming the bed regularly, especially between the bed and the headboard, including in the pillows. It's also good to vacuum the bed itself and the headboard, if you have one.

Strömsholm bed mattresses contain soft natural materials, the very best for your sleep. Over time, all soft materials compress, which is completely normal as the mattress molds to your body. We use envelope-stitched and cushioned mattress pads for better durability, but advise you to turn your mattress pad every two months for the first year. Over time, the natural material will settle and by flipping the mattress, you will ensure that the material is evenly distributed.

However, cushioned and spiked mattress pads are not machine washable. Instead, use an upholstery cleaner or all-purpose cleaner to gently remove any stains. This also applies to the rest of the bed. We recommend using a protective bed mattress cover to protect the mattress from stains and dirt. These are usually easily machine washable.

Remember that your bed is at its best if you air it out. Don't throw the covers on first thing in the morning, but pull the duvet down to the foot of the bed and open the window for a while. Ideally, the duvet should stay neatly at the foot of the bed until you go to sleep in the evening. This is to remove moisture and heat from the bed after a good night's sleep.

We humans also carry mites, small arachnids that eat skin debris. They are usually found in the hair on the body, but can also be found in the bed and thrive in warmth and humidity. By not making the bed during the day and ventilating it, you can prevent the growth of mites.
